Find out places where to see gorillas in Africa. For seeing mountain gorillas, these places include Rwanda, Uganda and Congo. In Uganda, you can see gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the south western section of the country. In Rwanda, you can only see gorillas at the Volcanoes National Park. Whereas in the Democratic republic of Congo, go see gorillas at the Virunga National Park.

  1. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a home to mountain gorillas in Uganda. The park in south western stretching cross Kabale and Kanungu districts is a believed to have half the number of mountain gorillas in the world. Bwindi has four gorilla trekking regions with each region having its own gorilla families. A number of 8 people are allocated to visit one gorilla family per day and each group has 8 permits. The four sectors of Bwindi include Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga gorilla region. There are 19 Gorilla groups combined together from all the four gorilla regions of Bwindi. Those of Buhoma sector include Mubare Mubare Gorilla Family, Habinyanja Gorilla Group, Rushegura Gorilla Family and Katwe Gorilla Family. Nkuringo Sector has got Nkuringo Gorilla Family, Bushaho Gorilla Family, Bweza Gorilla Group and Christmas Gorilla Family. Ruhija Sector is found in the east of Bwindi has got Oruzogo Gorilla Family, Bitukura Gorilla Group, Kyaguliro Gorilla Group and Mukiza Gorilla Family. Rushaga Gorilla Families include Nshongi Gorilla Family, Busingye Gorilla Group, Kahungye Gorilla Family, Bweza Gorilla Group, Mishaya gorilla family and Rwigi Gorilla Family.

  1. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Uganda

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is also in south western Uganda in Kisoro district is the second home to Mountain gorillas in Uganda. Mgahinga has got only one gorilla family available for visiting by tourists. This group is called the Nyakagezi Group.

Volcanoes National Park Rwanda is the only habitat for mountain gorillas in Rwanda found in Ruhengeri areas in the north of the country. The park has 10 gorilla families and these include Susa family (Susa A), Sabyinyo Family, Amahoro family, Agashya Family, Umubano group, Kwitonda family, Hirwa family, Karisimbi family. Like the case in Uganda, each of these gorilla families is visited by a maximum of 8 persons per day.

Virunga National Park is found in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This is the place where mountain gorillas in the vast central African country are found. There are eight habituated gorilla families in Congo in Virunga National Park for those who want pay a visit to gorillas there. The gorilla groups include Rugendo, Kabirizi, Lulengo, Humba, Mapuwa, Munyaga, Nyakamwe, and Bageni gorilla family.

You need a gorilla permit to trek gorillas in any of the 3 countries. In Uganda and Rwanda, you have an option of doing a 1 and 2 days tours to Bwindi, Mgahinga and Volcanoes National Park respectively. This is possible when you go through Kigali to Volcanoes or Uganda gorilla parks. The most common gorilla tours last for 3 days. In Uganda, safaris to Bwindi and Mgahinga may either begin from Kigali in Rwanda, Entebbe to the parks by flying or road transfers. Gorilla safaris in Rwanda and Congo begin from Kigali. Seeing gorillas in the wild is an activity that may be done alone or supplemented with other safari and tour activities near or far from the gorilla parks. Time and budget usually determine which activities that may be done before or after gorilla visits.

  • Permits to See Gorillas

You cannot trek gorillas unless you have a gorilla permit. Such permits are sold by the Uganda Wildlife Authority in Uganda (UWA), Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in Rwanda and Virunga park management for Virunga National Park in Congo. It is advisable to book a gorilla permit in about half a year before the visiting date. Permits are usually competitive especially in Uganda and so they need early and timely bookings. A gorilla trekking permit in Uganda is at USD 600 and that for gorilla habituation experience at USD 1500. In Rwanda, the same permit is at USD 1500 and USD 450 for Congo permit.
